CURRICULUM VITAE

Renowned Swedish conductor Per-Otto Johansson is a much sought after classical conductor on the international stage, working most frequently with acclaimed orchestras in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Johansson’s renown has come at a younger age than is usual in the profession, yet already, his résumé is remarkably accomplished. His work is uncompromising in its artistic approach, and many of the world's premiere orchestras are eager to play under his baton.

Johansson grew up in a family that knew nothing of classical music, but he was fascinated from early on and started his education at the Marine Orchestra: the start of a long journey. Johansson’s studies, which he embarked on at the Malmö Academy of Music, formed the foundations for a stellar career in classical music. During this period, Johansson also attended masterclasses with the renowned Kurt Sanderling, Piere Boulez, Esa- Pekka Salonen and Manfred Honeck. He graduated with distinction from Prof. Michel Tabachnik’s conducting class at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2003. Since then, Per-Otto has worked tirelessly to build on his knowledge and capture the spirit of the music he so dearly loves.

Johansson started with conducting 'Guldringen', based on Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelungen. In the season that followed, he worked with the Danish National Opera in a performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute and captivated audiences with a breath-taking performance.

2010 was a momentous year for Johansson; a year that heralded his debut with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (the national orchestra of Sweden). The organizers were so impressed with his performance that they immediately invited him to return the next season. In the spring of 2011, Johansson was back at the Danish National Opera for a fresh, ambitious and highly acclaimed production of The Barber of Seville. Here, he led epic performances with all five regional orchestras of Denmark. The response from the public and critics alike was overwhelmingly positive.

Consistently imbued with the energy and ambition to work on fresh projects, Per-Otto rarely finds the time to put down his baton; working a prodigious number of engagements in pursuit of his passion. He has conducted about 50 opera productions around the world, always striving to find a gentle balance between singers and the necessary interaction between stage-management and music. In 2015, Maskarade at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen had its memorable premier with Johansson as a conductor.

During 2017/18 Johansson conducted l’Elixir d´Amore by Donizetti at the Danish National Opera. In the same period, he conducted Die Lustige Witwe at Stockholm Opera as well as concerts in Holland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.

Per-Otto Johansson has become a highly sought-after conductor among Dutch, Belgian and Danish orchestras, and in the forthcoming season will conduct the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra and at Stockholm Opera. There is no doubt that his talent will illuminate European stages for years to come.
